On Tuesday, March 4, voters will go to the polls in a special primary election to fill the Second Suffolk Representative District Seat.
For 17 years, this rarely vacant slot, which includes Chelsea and Charlestown, has been filled by Eugene L. O’Flaherty, who has left the post to serve as chief legal counsel in new Boston Mayor Marty Walsh’s administration.
In a field of three which includes Dan Ryan of Charlestown and Chris Remmes of Milton, former Chelsea City Councilor Roy Avellaneda has also tossed his hat in the ring. Of the three, the only one we are familiar with is Avellaneda.
Roy brings a wealth of grassroots and legislative experience to the position. The son of Argentine immigrants, Avellaneda was raised in Chelsea, where his family has long operated the landmark Broadway bakery, Tito’s.
Unfortunately, due to historically low voter participation, Latinos have been poorly represented in our increasingly multicultural state’s government, where only ten legislators currently serve on the Commonwealth’s Black and Latino Caucus.
With this fast approaching special election less than a month away, if the Latino community wishes to elect one of it’s own, it is imperative that those in the district organize and mobilize quickly. Although the general election on April 1 will follow the primary, it is highly likely that the victor will be chosen next month in this overwhelmingly Democratic area.
The winner of this election will be the voice of the district, representing two very different sections of Greater Boston. El Mundo urges its readers in this region to begin now to work towards electing their candidate and to be sure to turnout to vote on March 4.

Los Latinos de Chelsea Deben Movilizarse Ahora…
El martes 4 de marzo, los votantes irán a las urnas para una elección primaria especial, con el fin de llenar el asiento del segundo representante del Distrito de Suffolk.
Durante 17 años, el cargo que hoy está vacante, el cual incluye Chelsea y Charlestown, ha sido ocupado por Eugene L. O’Flaherty, quien ha dejado dicha posición para servir como jefe de Consejería Legal en la nueva administración municipal de Marty Walsh en Boston.
En un campo donde compiten tres candidatos incluyendo a Dan Ryan de Charlestown y Chris Remmes de Milton ,el exconcejal de Chelsea Roy Avellaneda también ha lanzado su sombrero al ring. De los tres, el único que es familiar para nosotros es Avellaneda.
Roy trae ricas raíces y gran experiencia legislativa para esa posición. Hijo de inmigrantes argentinos, Avellaneda creció en Chelsea, donde su familia posee desde hace largo tiempo una panadería que es emblemática en la calle Broadway: Tito’s Bakery.
Infortunadamente, debido a la históricamente baja participación de los votantes, los latinos han sido pobremente representados en un gobierno multicultural, creciente, donde solamente diez legisladores sirven actualmente a la comunidad afroamericana y latina en la política del estado.
Con esta elección que se aproxima, a menos de un mes, si la comunidad latina desea elegir a uno de los suyos, es imperativo que aquellos que viven en ese distrito se organicen y se movilicen rápidamente. Aunque la elección general del primero de abril seguirá a la votación primaria, es casi seguro que el ganador sea seleccionado el próximo mes en esta área abrumadoramente democrática.
El triunfador en esta elección será la voz del distrito, representando dos secciones muy diferentes en el área metropolitana de Boston. El Mundo hace un llamado urgente a sus lectores de dicha región para que empiecen ahora a trabajar hacia la elección de su candidato, y aseguren su salida a votar el 4 de marzo.
