A Few Reflections for the Fourth
For those of us fortunate enough to enjoy the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, the Fourth of July is not only a summertime celebration happily shared together by families at barbecues, beaches, baseball games, parades and fireworks but also a day when our great nation recalls its founding and looks forward towards our shared future.
This year, as we again commemorate the country’s birthday, America, a nation of immigrants from the start, continues to be an incomparable beacon of freedom for people from all over the world.
While acknowledging that the United States cannot accommodate everyone who seeks safe haven here, the situation is entirely different for an estimated more than 11 million undocumented immigrants who already call America home.
Some 200 plus years later, Thomas Jefferson’s immortal words in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal” remains an ideal to aspire to.
As you celebrate the Fourth of July with your loved ones, let’s hope that our nation’s leaders, despite grandstanding and gridlock, can find a way to finally work together for meaningful reforms so that all of these hardworking, taxpaying, family-oriented, patriotic men, women and children, many of whom were born here and are Americans in every way, at long last achieve the equality and the “pursuit of life, liberty and happiness” that our founding fathers envisioned.

Algunas Reflexiones Para el Cuatro de Julio
Para aquellos de nosotros que gozamos suficiente de los derechos y responsabilidades de la ciudadanía, el cuatro de julio no es únicamente una celebración de verano, felizmente compartiendo junto con las familias los asados, playas, juegos de béisbol, desfiles, juegos pirotécnicos, sino también la oportunidad para recordar los fundamentos y mirar hacia adelante el futuro que nos espera para compartir.
Este año, tal como conmemoramos de nuevo el nacimiento del país, los Estados Unidos de América, una nación de inmigrantes desde el comienzo, continúa siendo un faro de libertad para personas de todo el mundo.
Mientras se conoce que los Estados Unidos no pueden acomodar a todos aquellos que buscan una vivienda segura acá, la situación es completamente diferente para más de 11 millones de inmigrantes sin visa de residente que denominan HOGAR a los Estados Unidos.
Después de 200 años, las palabras inmortales de Thomas Jefferson en su Declaración de Independencia: “Todos los hombres fueron creados igualmente”, permanecen como un ideal de inspiración.
Al tiempo que usted celebra el cuatro de julio, a pesar de la falta de apoyo y el bloqueo, confiemos en que los líderes de la nación puedan encontrar el camino para trabajar juntos, finalmente por una reforma significativa para que los incansables trabajadores, contribuyentes al sistema de impuestos, familias bien orientadas, seres patrióticos, mujeres y niños, muchos de los cuales nacieron aquí y son americanos de alguna manera, logren al fin la igualdad y “busquen la vida, libertad y felicidad” que los padres de la patria tuvieron como una visión.
