“Suffer the Little Children to Come Unto Me” –
Responding to a request by President Obama, last week Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said that he would like our state to be part of the solution to the tragic crisis of nearly 60,000 unaccompanied minors from Central America who have recently arrived at the nation’s southern border. While specific details have yet to be arranged, the Governor offered to provide temporary housing in the Commonwealth to a small portion of these children while they await court hearings.
While some pundits and politicians have seized the issue as a symbol of the nation’s broken immigration system, the Governor’s perspective of this as a humanitarian emergency is unquestionably more accurate. Fleeing rampant gang and drug violence, these frightened and impoverished children, mostly from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, are certainly better regarded as desperate refugees seeking asylum here rather than immigrants attempting to illegally cross the country’s border.
There is precedent for the Governor’s charitable offer of assistance, which not incidentally would be paid for by the federal government. Following Hurricane Katrina, some 200 evacuees were sheltered at Cape Cod’s Camp Edwards until they found permanent housing.
In myriad ways, the Commonwealth has distinguished itself as a charitable place willing to share our good fortune with the less privileged. Let’s all follow Governor Patrick’s brave and kind lead to open our doors to the little children in need of our help now.

Respondiendo a una petición del presidente Barack Obama, la semana pasada el gobernador de Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, dijo que le gustaría que nuestro estado fuera parte de la solución a la trágica crisis de unos 60 mil menores de edad sin documentos que llegaron recientemente desde Centro América hasta la frontera sur de esta nación. Todavía sin especificar detalles, el gobernador ofreció vivienda temporal en Massachusetts para una pequeña porción de los niños, mientras esperan audiencias en las cortes.
Mientras algunos opositores políticos han tomado el caso como un símbolo del resquebrajado sistema de inmigración, la perspectiva del gobernador que lo ve como una emergencia humanitaria es incuestionable y más precisa.
Huyéndole al rampante crecimiento de las pandillas y a la violencia causada por el narcotráfico, estos pobres y amenazados niños, la mayoría de Honduras, Guatemala y El Salvador, deben ser mejor vistos como refugiados pidiendo asilo que como inmigrantes tratando de cruzar ilegalmente la frontera del país.
Hay un precedente de una oferta de caridad hecha por el gobernador, pagada no incidentalmente por el gobierno federal. Después del huracán Katrina, unas 200 personas evacuadas fueron albergadas en Camp Edwards en Cape Cod hasta que consiguieron vivienda permanente.
En varias ocasiones, la administración estatal se ha distinguido como un lugar caritativo deseoso de compartir nuestra buena fortuna con los menos privilegiados. Sigamos todos el valiente y gentil liderazgo del gobernador Patrick para abrir nuestras puertas a estos pequeños niños que necesitan hoy nuestra ayuda.
